Acci Organizes A Panel Discussion On "Sukuk And Bonds"

As part of a series of panel discussions that the Ajman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) organizes for its employees to enhance their knowledge, exchange information and monitor recommendations and proposals that serve the work environment, Abdullah Al Muwaiji-Chairman, chaired a virtually-held panel discussion titled "Sukuk and Bonds". The session was joined by Salem Al Suwaidi, Director General, and executive directors, alongside all the Chamber's and Ajman Bank’s employees. Commencing the session, Al Muwaiji welcomed the attendees and emphasized the importance of the session, as it clarifies the differences between bonds and sukuk. He also praised the efforts of the UAE to approve a strategy for public debt and to enhance confidence in the country's economy, especially with high credit ratings. During the panel-discussion, bonds were defined as long-term loans with a pre-determined date of repayment and a fixed interest rate. The issuing establishment must pay the bond’s value upon maturity plus interest every year or six months according to the agreement between it and investor. Bonds are one of the lending methods to finance the operational activities. Bonds vary between secured bonds and supported by mortgage, unsecured bonds, which are convertible into common shares, and callable bonds, which can be paid before the maturity date. The session also explained sukuk and their features. They represent nominal equal value securities issued for a specified period, each of which represents a common share in the ownership of assets, benefits, rights, or a specific project or its rights or cash flows. They do not represent a debt on its source to the sukuk holders. They are issued and traded in accordance with the conditions and Shariah controls and based on the principle of sharing in profit and loss. Their profits are from the outcome of their activities. Among the types of sukuk are “Mudaraba Sukuk, Murabaha Sukuk, Musharaka Sukuk and Ijarah Sukuk.”
